How to Improve Your Skills as a Woodworker

Woodworking is a fulfilling and useful skill to have. You can start out making things as simple as basic shapes or trinkets and eventually make beautifully ornate things like furniture or instruments. You can use your woodworking skills to furnish your home, give meaningful gifts, and much more.

Before you can make more complex things, however, you need to first improve your skills as a woodworker.

Buy Some Books

There are many great books on woodworking nowadays that you can buy either in hardcopy or digital formats. If you are a beginner to woodworking, it is probably best to get books covering the basics of the skill.

As your skills improve, you can buy books that describe more complex techniques and concepts involved in woodworking. If you don’t have time to browse through thousands of woodworking books, you can check out online lists of woodworking books to narrow your search and save you time.

Practice Your Skills

You will never improve at something if you don’t practice it. Reading about woodworking can help you understand it in theory, but you won’t understand completely how wood feels and how it is molded by different tools and machines. Before using tools and machines, make sure that you follow any necessary safety precautions and guidelines.

You can either purchase your own tools and machines, find a friend who will let you use their equipment, rent equipment, or go to a public place with woodworking equipment. Modern machines are often of lower quality than older machines. Keep this in mind when you are woodworking to stay safe and know what to expect.

Learn From Other Woodworkers

If you are learning woodworking by yourself, it can feel overwhelming to try to figure out everything on your own. Furthermore, it can be very time consuming to look up answers to all your questions instead of just asking someone in person. If possible, find a mentor who can help you learn the skill in person. If you can’t do this or find someone near you, there are plenty of online platforms with video tutorials on woodworking.

As you are learning to woodwork, you will probably gain a deeper appreciation for the time and skill that goes into the hobby. To gain further inspiration, you can visit museums or check out the pieces of local woodworkers. Seeing these pieces can help you further develop your style.
