Why You Should Quit More Often
Western society tends to look down on quitters. The prevailing belief seems to be that good people always stick through to the end.
But you might be shocked just how much better your life becomes–privately and professionally–if you give yourself permission to quit every once in a while.
Embrace Better Opportunities
You’ve only got one life to live! You might as well spend it trying to take advantage of the many opportunities available. There are many times when ‘playing it safe’ results in you missing out on a better potential pathway.
For example–if you’re stuck in a job that is likely never going to let you progress your skills or your salary, the safer option is certainly to stay and make a consistent living. If you decide to keep that consistency every time potential for growth, new passions, and new environments pass you by, you’re going to miss out on a lot.
Get Out of a Toxic Relationship
Cycles of familiarity often keep us in places that we shouldn’t be. This can apply to toxicity in many contexts–with friends, families, work environments, and more. A toxic partner is one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome. Constantly feeling pressured to do things you don’t want to is a sign of an unhealthy relationship.
A partner who constantly puts you down, hurts you, or struggles with communication is also probably not a great person to be around. There are many different factors that can make a relationship toxic, and it’s not as simple as someone intentionally treating you badly. Do thorough research and talk to a therapist if you need to identify which relationships in your life are not healthy.
Mental Health
Modern American culture tends to fetishize what some might call ‘the grind.’ There’s this idea that happiness and fulfillment will come if you only work a little bit harder. Some successful people laud the advantages of sleeping little and working long hours every week. While everyone’s work-life balance is different, it’s important to keep a careful eye on your mental health. People often feel the need to push themselves to unreasonable lengths in order to keep up with work culture.
Don’t be afraid to quit if it’s simply the right thing to do. There are innumerable valid reasons to quit–escaping toxicity, improving your mental health, moving on to better things, and more. Even just wanting to quit can often be an indication that you should be elsewhere.
