When to Know It’s Time to Renovate Your Bathroom
Have you ever looked at your bathroom and wondered if you should renovate it? Sometimes it’s blatantly obvious that a bathroom needs renovating. Other times it’s more a matter of desire than necessity. If you’re uncertain, there are some signs you can look for that indicate that your bathroom needs renovation.
There’s Mold
Bathrooms are among the dampest areas of a house. As such, they’re more likely to see mold growth than in other rooms. That’s a serious concern since mold can threaten your health.
If you have mold in your bathroom, you may notice that the room doesn’t dry well. It may smell musty and you may see dark spots. Because mold can grow behind the walls, you may need to renovate your bathroom instead of simply cleaning it. Replacing the walls, flooring, and caulking is a good place to start.
You Have Bad Smells
It’s not unusual for bathrooms to smell a little funny from time to time, given what people do in there. That said, however, you may need to renovate your bathroom if you notice bad smells that you can’t pin on someone recently using the bathroom.
Bad smells emanating from your bathroom are often an indication of sewer problems. Have a plumber inspect your bathroom and plumbing. They may need to do a sewer scope to figure out what’s going on. Depending on what they discover, you may need to have some of the plumbing redone in your bathroom. It’s a pain, but it’s less of a pain than dealing with the aftermath of a blocked sewer pipeline that goes unaddressed for too long.
You’re Getting Ready to Sell
Buyers look closely at bathrooms when deciding whether or not to make an offer on a house. As such, it’s smart to renovate your bathroom before you try to sell your house. Bring your bathroom up to date and make sure everything works properly. Prioritize function over aesthetic, but don’t ignore it altogether. Your bathroom should look both functional and comfortable to attract as many buyers as possible.
At the end of the day, you’re the best judge of whether or not you should renovate your bathroom. Just keep in mind that some issues may push you to renovate more strongly than others. Barring signs that indicate your health or the condition of your bathroom (and, by extension, your home) is at risk, however, it’s entirely up to you to determine if the timing is right for a bathroom renovation.
